Sports Games

Sports computer games simulate the playing of traditional physical sports such as football, cricket, boxing, rugby, skateboarding, tennis, baseball, American football, golf, basketball, ice hockey and bowling. In many cases, the game focuses on the actual playing of the sport, although some emphasise the strategy behind the sport, with the player acting as team manager, handling tactics, transfers and financial issues.

Some of the very earliest computer games were sports games, including Tennis for Two (1958) and Baseball (1971), and they have formed an important part of a console's library of titles ever since. The sports genre is currently dominated by EA Sports and 2K Sports, both of whom hold licenses to produce games based on official leagues such as FIFA, NBA and NASCAR.
