Square Co.

Square Co., Ltd. was a Japanese video game company founded in September 1983 by Masafumi Miyamoto and Hironobu Sakaguchi. Their early games were released for the Nintendo Family Computer (also known as the Famicom, and known internationally as the Nintendo Entertainment System); however these were not particularly successful, and in 1987, the company faced the possibility of bankruptcy. The fortunes of the company changed with the release of the role-playing game Final Fantasy (so-called as it was thought to be Square's final game), which resulted in a number of sequels, including the massively popular Final Fantasy VII for the Sony PlayStation in 1997.
Square has also made other widely known games such as Chrono Trigger, the Kingdom Hearts series (in collaboration with Disney Interactive), Secret of Mana, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Seiken Densetsu 3, Brave Fencer Musashi, Vagrant Story, and, to a lesser extent, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (independent from Nintendo Co. Ltd).
Square was merged into Enix (known for the Dragon Quest series), another Japanese video game producer, in 2002, forming the new company, Square Enix.
SquareSoft was a brand name used by Square between 1992 and 2003. As such, the name is often used (incorrectly) to refer to the entire organisation, but its corporate name remained Square Co., Ltd. until the Enix merger.
