Taito

Taito

The Taito Corporation is a Japanese developer of video game software and arcade hardware, established in 1953 in Manchuria by Michael Kogan. Taito started out by importing and distributing vending machines, moving on to leasing and manufacturing jukeboxes and coin-op mechanical and pinball games. In the 1970s, they introduced their first video arcade game, and in 1978, they released the company's most popular title and one of the most memorable games in arcade history: Space Invaders. In the 1980s, Taito branched out into releasing games exclusively for home computers and consoles.

Taito has had a huge influence on the course of videogame history, developing innovative games, with Space Invaders the most notable, but including other games such as Bubble Bobble, Qix, Elevator Action, Jungle Hunt and Puzzle Bobble, which also introduced unique and innovative gameplay ideas. In October 2005, Sega released Taito Legends, a set of 29 Taito arcade games for Microsoft's Xbox, Sony's PlayStation 2 and PC. The PSP version contains 16 games.

In September 2005, Taito became a subsidiary wholly owned by Square Enix.
